Course Description

The Fundamentals course provides a comprehensive foundation for anyone beginning a career in memorialization. Across five modules, learners explore the history, skills, values, and professional standards that shape today’s monument industry. The course begins with an engaging look at how memorial practices have evolved—from ancient traditions to modern craftsmanship—highlighting the cultural and technological forces that influence the work of memorialists today.

Learners then build essential safety awareness by examining what a strong safety culture looks like in shops, yards, and cemeteries. Through practical examples and industry standards, participants learn how to identify hazards, use tools and PPE correctly, and help create safe, accountable worksites.

The course also introduces the role of professional credentials in advancing careers and elevating the industry. Learners discover how certifications such as the Certified Memorialist® reinforce ethical practice, technical skill, and client confidence.
Building on this foundation, the course explores the materials at the heart of memorial work—granite, marble, bronze, porcelain, and more. Participants learn how materials are chosen, handled, finished, and preserved, and how technical decisions support both durability and emotional meaning.

Finally, learners strengthen their communication skills by practicing how to speak with clarity, empathy, and professionalism when supporting grieving families. The course reinforces proper use of monument terminology to ensure that every interaction is both accurate and compassionate.
Together, these five modules prepare learners with the knowledge, vocabulary, and mindset needed to participate confidently in the monument industry—grounded in respect for tradition, commitment to safety, and dedication to serving families with care.
